HOW RUNNING A BUSINESS IS LIKE A GAME OF TETRIS

HOW RUNNING A BUSINESS IS LIKE A GAME OF TETRIS

I had a thought one day while driving to go pick up my son at the airport. I did a 'talk to text' in Google Keep so that I wouldn't forget this analogy. I was going through my notes to find something and there it was... sitting there not doing anyone any good. So I'm going to share with you a much easier to digest version.

Our businesses are like a video game. The game I'm thinking of specifically is TETRIS.

Did you ever play tetris as a kid? When we got the first Nintendo, that was MY GAME. In fact, here's something really weird I remember about Tetris... If I listened to Nirvana while playing it, specifically the In Utero album, I could always get a super high score. Isn't that a weird memory?

Anyways, why my brain was thinking about Tetris and how it's like our business is this... LEVELS, SPEED and ACCURACY.

Ever heard the phrase "New Level, New Devil"? As we climb up in our business, we will without a doubt encounter struggles, that we have never encountered before. When I started charging more money, I encountered a new devil called Time Management. Very different beast than it was when I was charging peanuts for my Done for You services. I also felt more pressure at this new level to meet expectations around the price point I was charging.

The more you play Tetris, the more points you rack up, the better you get, the faster the game gets. The best way to navigate these new levels is by having a solid foundation built, you know what I'm talking about. There's nothing better than building up a high tower and getting that long piece that takes out multiple layers of blocks. It's all about strategy and anticipating the next pieces that are going to show up. At least the game gives you a hint of what's coming up next. Business doesn't always give you a heads up that chaos is about to ensue. But, if you have a solid foundation, built on your core values, you can handle anything that comes your way. I also recommend having a great talk it out buddy, a coach, or mentor to help you navigate uncharted territory.

So as the game gets faster and faster, the accuracy of your piece placement is vital. One wrong move at rapid speed can end the game in the blink of an eye.

What we can learn from Tetris is that the game doesn't start out at rapid speed for a reason. If you instantly lose, why on earth would you want to keep playing it? It's designed to help you get better with practice. I've said before and I'll say again, Simon Biles didn't wake up one day knowing how to jump and flip like that. She practiced over and over and over and over and over again. She fell. She got back up. She practiced repeatedly. So when you fall down in your business, when you hit a road block, when your launch doesn't go as planned, you have to make a choice. Will you call it quits and move on to the next shiny object, or will you embody James Dyson and make another 5,000+ prototypes until it works the way you want it to?

Running a business is a practice. Take the time to build a solid foundation, that is in alignment with your goals and values. Don't go at it alone. Hire a coach, mentor to help you avoid the mistakes that will cost you the game. If you need a referral to someone who can help you, I'm a rolodex of resources! Just let me know what you need! I got you boo!
